Stalin’s participation in various political and social initiatives along with his inter personal skills, literary knowledge and innovative ideas, made him an ideal contestant for the 1984 State Assembly Elections to represent the DMK Party.

Failure, The Stepping Stone for Grand Success:

In 1984, a sympathy wave swept over Tamil Nadu following the assassination of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the deteriorating health of the Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran. Stalin, was nominated as the DMK candidate in the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai against the AIADMK candidate, K.A.Krishnaswamy. This marked his first foray, officially, in the political arena and though he lost to his opponent by a small margin, he put forward a determined fight that had paved the road to success in all his future endeavours.
